Who Viking is for
Viking is the clearest positioning in the business: adults only, destination first, and a shore excursion included everywhere you stop. There is no casino and no children’s club, because there are no children.
What that buys is a quiet ship and a passenger list that is there for the same reason you are. The itineraries carry more overnight port stays and more two-day calls than the large lines manage, on the assumption that you came to see the place rather than the pool deck.
The river fleet deserves separate mention. A river ship ties up in the middle of the city (Budapest, Vienna, Bordeaux, Porto) rather than at an industrial terminal an hour outside it, and on a Danube or Rhine sailing you step off the ship into the town.
What to know before you book
Adults only is absolute. Under-eighteens are not carried. This is the line’s single most-appreciated policy and the one most likely to rule it out.
The included excursion is a real one. It is a genuine half-day tour, not a shuttle into town, and on a river sailing it is often the best thing you do that day.
River and ocean are different vacations. The river ships are small, calm and port-intensive with no sea days at all. The ocean ships are mid-sized and conventional. Do not assume a good experience of one predicts the other.
