Rotterdam

Rotterdam is the third Pinnacle-class ship and the seventh Holland America vessel to carry the name, which is a longer lineage than most cruise ships get and is worth being precise about, because the name has been reused often enough to cause genuine confusion. This is the 2021 hull. She was ordered in January 2017, laid down in November 2019, launched in October 2020 and delivered by Fincantieri at Marghera on 30 July 2021. She is not the 1997 Rotterdam, which Holland America sold in 2020 and which now sails for Fred. Olsen as Borealis, and she is not the 1959 liner, which is a museum hotel moored in the city she is named for.

How she got the name

She was ordered as Ryndam, and was called that through most of her construction. In July 2020, with the 1997 Rotterdam sold off in the middle of the shutdown, Holland America renamed the unfinished ship to keep the name in the fleet. Princess Margriet of the Netherlands christened her in May 2022, the fifth Holland America ship she has named, the previous one being Oosterdam in 2003. In October 2022 Rotterdam re-sailed the company’s original 1872 itinerary for its 150th anniversary. Holland America takes its own history more seriously than most lines do, and this ship is where that is most visible.

What the 2026 refit changed

She went into dry dock in the Port of Rotterdam from 12 to 26 April 2026, a refit in her namesake harbor, which is the sort of thing that happens once. The work was not a rebuild. The casino on deck three grew by close to twenty slot machines, twenty-two Vista Suites gained sofa beds so they sleep four, the hull was repainted, and the main dining room got flexible seating instead of fixed tables.

The interesting part was the music. The Billboard Onboard and Rolling Stone rooms on deck two had their connecting space reworked for better flow between sets, and two new live-music stages were built where there had been none: one in the Crow’s Nest, the observation lounge at the top of the ship, and one outdoors at the aft Sea View Pool. That is a deliberate move. Holland America spent 2025 and 2026 dismantling the Music Walk as a fixed set of four themed rooms, Lincoln Center Stage lost its resident string quartet and became a touring act, and putting live music into more of the ship instead. Whether you count that as a gain depends on whether you came for a chamber ensemble or for a band by the pool.

The Rolling Stone room aboard her is the Rock Room format, with a five-piece band, which she shares with Koningsdam and Nieuw Statendam. The older Vista and Signature ships have the smaller Rolling Stone Lounge instead. It is a real difference and one of the few concrete reasons to pick a Pinnacle hull over a cheaper one.

Where she sails

Two seasons and a crossing between them. Summers she is based at Rotterdam, running seven-night Norwegian fjord sailings and longer runs to Iceland out of Reykjavík, with occasional Mediterranean work out of Piraeus. In mid-October she crosses to Fort Lauderdale and spends the winter on Caribbean and Bahamas itineraries before going back. Sailings run from a week to more than three, with the typical booking around a fortnight, and the transatlantic repositionings are sold as cruises in their own right.

Who she suits

People who want a large-ish ship that does not behave like one, a long itinerary, and live music every night without a theme park attached. At 2,668 guests she is less than half the size of the biggest ships afloat and there is almost nothing to line up for. Her Northern European program is the strongest argument for her: fjords and Iceland are better from a ship that can get into the narrow water.

She is slow, at eighteen knots in service, which is a consequence of the itineraries rather than a defect. She does not suit families with children, the kids’ club exists and is usually quiet, and she does not suit anyone who wants a waterslide, a go-kart track or a surf simulator, because there is not one aboard and there is not going to be. If you are choosing between her and Nieuw Statendam, the ships are near-identical and you should choose on the itinerary, not the hull.
